Rugby Borough Women FC celebrate cup final win

Rugby Borough scored every penalty to ensure we took home the Birmingham FA County Challenge Cup in a thrilling eight goal final against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The game was intense, with Rugby getting the first goal just ten minutes in. Georgia Robert won the ball back in midfield and played a beautiful pass to Angelina Nixon who threaded the ball perfectly to Lily Greenslade. Greenslade fired her shot across the keeper and found the corner to give us an early lead.

Our prowess upfront continued in the first-half as we got our second just before the break. Some excellent play from Yasmin Mosby in the lead up saw a perfect pass find Lucy Whipp at the edge of the 18-yard box, who cooly fired it in to double our lead.

A good cross from the Wolves saw them equalise with one minute of regular time remaining. Again, Borough did not let this cause problems for us as Nicky Potts found the back of the net just three minutes later. Nixon again kept her cool in the box and threaded in a perfectly timed through ball that Potts had no problem getting on the end of.

Wolves were able to draw level again after a well delivered free-kick was converted in a scramble of players on the 6-yard line. That is where we finished, 4-4 – a great advert for Midlands football.

Borough showed great composure in the shootout, scoring all their penalties in the order of: Camwell, Curwood-Wagner, Wiseman, and finally Whipp. Wolves player Sophie Bramford missed her penalty, before Erin Foley crucially saved their fourth to see us take home the trophy.

Lily Greenslade took home Player of the Match which was the icing on the cake of a fantastic evening. All the players and staff should be incredibly proud of what we have achieved this season.

Thank you to all the fans who have supported us this season and we look forward to what’s to come!

Wolves were unable to score until the second half, but they got their first of the game after 49 minutes with a great finish from outside the 18-yard box. 69 minutes saw Lee Burch make his first changes – Saskia Morris and Yasmin Mosby were replaced by Emily Wallace and Samantha Curwood-Wagner.

It didn’t look like the Wolves goal phased us initially, as we were able to get on the scoresheet again 74 minutes into the game. A great breakaway goal resulted in Lily Greenslade grabbing a brace.

84 minutes in Wolves were awarded a penalty which they scored. Two minutes later, another change was made as goal scorer Lily Greenslade was replaced by Jess Camwell.
