Coventry United Ladies 4-0 MK Dons Ladies

Coventry United Ladies are just one victory away from the FA Womens’ National League Southern Premier Division title following a 4-0 win against MK Dons Ladies at Communications Park.

The three points ensures the league leaders are now 10 points clear at the top of the table, and will be mathematically out of sight of closest rivals Cardiff City Ladies on Sunday, if United can defeat the Bluebirds on home turf. Following the disappointing 1-1 draw at home to a much improved QPR Women the previous weekend, Cov manager Jay Bradford was taking no chances, as she recalled striker Lois Jefferies to the starting 11, along with centre-mid Jade Brook, with Jenna Roberts and the injured Shannon O’Brien making way. MK Dons handed debuts to Ellie Richings and Ella Gray, along with a first start of the season for captain Sasha Newsome.

It was a game Coventry dominated, with MK Dons failing to register a single shot. But concerns over United’s shooting accuracy left some Cov fans nervy, with efforts from Amber Hughes and Helen Dermody coming within inches of giving the home side the advantage, while Sophie Schultz in the Dons net seemed equal to most attempts on target. It would take United 38 minutes to seize the advantage, with Amber Hughes taking the plaudits. The winger had ripped Milton Keynes apart down the flanks, but her determination in the box saw her attempt not once, but twice on Schultz’s net from close range. Helen Dermody’s cross from the left met the sliding Hughes, whose initial effort was smothered by Schultz, but the ball came loose and Hughes, while still on the turf, was able to rotate her body and turn the ball home to make it 1-0.

Hughes was on hand to put United back on the front foot in lightning quick fashion after the break, with her venomous effort from outside the box flying into the net just 15 seconds after the opening whistle of the half. The Player of the Match would also have a role to play in goal number three on 68 minutes, as she was tripped in the penalty area by a Dons defender. Chenise Austin jogged up to her home from home, and cooley sent the spot kick into the bottom corner. Coventry comfortably in control of the encounter, and, not content to settle for 3-0, continued to fire on the MK net, with Dermody launching one off the crossbar. But in added time, the lead would be further extended, as Lois Jefferies took a chance from range and launched the ball into the far top corner.

The perfect response to a challenging week, as the Red and Girls look ahead to their toughest task yet, the visit of Cardiff City on Sunday, with the FAWNL Southern Premier Division title on the line.
