Coventry United Ladies 2-0 Oxford United WomenDate: 04 April 2019 at 13:03 by Liam Cook
Coventry United Ladies returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Oxford United Women.
The Red and Green Girls, fresh from their first league defeat of the season 3 days prior, were determined to re-establish their 6 point lead at the top of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division table, and indeed they did, with Amber Hughes and Beth Merrick on the scoresheet. One enforced change from the Chichester game saw the injured Maz Gauntlett drop to the bench, although the midfielder was never likely to enter the match, with Shannon O’Brien taking her place in the centre.
It took Coventry just 4 minutes to take the lead. Amber Hughes’ tried to square the ball for the waiting Amy Wathan in the box, however Lucy Thomas in the Oxford goal was first to it, albeit sending the ball back to Hughes who fired into the far top corner from a tight angle. From there, the first half was a back and forth contest with few clear cut oppurtunties. Oxford’s patient attacking play went without reward, as United held the visitors back, with keeper Sue Wood not called into saving action until the second half. Shannon O’Brien had the best opportunity of the first half with a close range header from Beth Merrick’s free kick, but the youngster nodded the ball into the ground, allowing Thomas to catch the bouncing ball.
Oxford’s second half began brightly, with their first effort on target in the 46thminute, although Wood wasn’t tested by Noble’s low shot. The visitors would come oh so close to the equaliser with Timms taken off balance as she closed in on the net. The Oxford striker couldn’t hit the target, leaving Timms frustrated as the chance eluded her. O’Brien came even closer for United, with her strike off the laces edging inches wide to the left. Merrick gave Coventry some breathing room with goal number 2. The wing-back launched the ball across Thomas into the Oxford net following Lois Jefferies’ bobbling ball across the box. Oxford turned up the heat in the closing stages, but Coventry saw the game out comfortably, repelling the winged threat to seal a 2-0 triumph at Daventry.
