United Exit League Cup On PenaltiesDate: 05 December 2018 at 13:34 by Liam Cook
Coventry United’s League Cup journey came to an end at Sphinx Drive in the cruellest fashion possible.
The Red and Greens took on their city rivals Coventry Sphinx at their former home in Round 3 of the Midland Football League Cup, having made one change to the starting line from United’s FA Vase triumph at home to Hinckley, with Shaquille McDonald replacing the departed Kyle Carey. The contest was tight and fiery, with chances few and far between, leaving no way to separate the two teams than a penalty shootout following a scoreless 90 minutes.
Sphinx would take the win 4-3 on spot kicks following Jamal Clarke’s skied 12 yarder. Joe Cairns also saw his penalty saved for the Red and Greens, while Jackson Downie was the only Sphinx man not to find the net with his effort. Jake Holt, Kyle Barnett and Shaquille McDonald all successfully converted for the Red and Greens.
United and Sphinx will meet again, this time in the Total Motion Midland Football League Premier Division, on Boxing Day at the Butts Park Arena.
