Coventry United 2-1 Westfields

Date: 12 March 2019 at 10:52 by Liam Cook

Coventry United move up to 14thin the Total Motion Midland Football League Premier Division table with a well received 2-1 victory versus Westfields.

The Red and Greens now sit 11 points clear of the relegation zone, thanks to first half strikes from Eli Bako and Tyler Haddow. Manager Terry Anderson made three changes to the side that narrowly lost at Boldmere the previous Saturday, with Luke Jones, Kyle Barnett and the suspended Sam Belcher being replaced by Eli Bako, Ben Vallance and the returning Kyle Carey.

United will have felt a penalty was in order early on, as Gift Mussa was sandwiched between Westfields defenders, Matt Reeve and Sam Plane, before being bundled to the ground in the box. The Coventy fans and management looked on in shock as the official didn’t point to the spot. But the Red and Greens’ lead would come shortly after. A prolonged run up the left wing from Kyle Carey set up the onrushing Eli Bako, who skipped over a slide challenge and slotted the ball into the far bottom corner.

The lead would last 9 minutes, as John Mills equalised for the Fields. A cross from the right flank bounced off the heel of United defender Harry Sawyer into the path of the waiting Mills, who did the rest from close range. But United would regain the advantage in first half added time. Luke Downes free kick from the half way line met the head of skipper Jamal Clarke. His cross field header found centre-back partner Lewis Ison, who sung it into the path of a sliding Tyler Haddow, who converted his second goal in as many games.

The second half saw a combination of well drilled attacking moves, rebuffed by the visiting defence, and a hard fought defence display from Clarke and Ison to keep Westfields at bay. The Red and Greens rode their luck at times in the closing stages, but held on for a victory that lifted the spirits of both squad and supporters, ahead of a two week break.
