Statement on F. A. VaseDate: 18 January 2019 at 13:07 by Coventry United F.C.
With regret, Coventry United announce that we have been removed from this season’s F.A. Vase competition, thus there will be no fifth round tie versus Canterbury.
The reason for our removal is ‘ineligible player’. An error was made with the applicable start date of the suspension of Kevin Thornton who should not have played in the previous round versus Leicester Nirvana. Unfortunately, it was a simple unintentional mistake caused by our interpretation of information displayed with the F.A.’s ‘Wholegame’ system, with catastrophic consequences. The club has taken steps to safeguard against future occurrences.
Whilst the Football Association accepted that the circumstances were unintentional, the ineligibility is a matter of fact.
This news will come as a shock and huge disappointment to many of our supporters. We decided against any official announcement prior to the F.A.’s decision as we sought to present our case, which was dealt with on Thursday, however it was not to be and we received official notification today.
There are no other sanctions upon the club and no fines, and the club will be able to participate in next seasons competition as normal.
We apologise to all our fans, players, sponsors and stakeholders. We have had a great run in this seasons competition, and of course we all wanted to get at least one step further.
Please continue to back the players – it’s not their fault, as they take on Loughborough in the rearranged game tomorrow.
