Coventry United Retained List 2019

Date: 03 July 2019 at 12:17 by Liam Cook

Pre-season training has officially begun, and preparations for the forthcoming campaign are well under way. With our plans for 2019/20 starting to come to fruition, we are pleased to share the 2019 Coventry United retained list.

Starting with the goalkeepers, Brad Caswell looks to stake his claim to the number one jersey following the departure of Brendan Bunn. The former Leamington shotstopper started last season as number one, before providing a more than capable option in cup matches and various league encounters. Propping up the goalie options is Matteo Ninna. The Italian returns after making a solo appearance against Rugby Town in the FA Cup, replacing the sent off Jack Tregartha.

It’s often said a goalkeeper is only as strong as the defence in front of him. If that’s the case, Brad and Matteo will be just fine with some exceptional talent standing guard. Player of the Season, Kyle Barnett, is back for his third year with the Red and Greens. The Sky Blues academy product was unbeatable last season, and will be pivotal to keeping clean sheets next term. Former Walsall youngster Harry Sawyer seeks to continue his development with Coventry, as he extends his stay. Harry made 17 appearances last time out after joining mid-season. Long serving full-back, Ben Vallance, has also signed up. Ben has adorned the red shirt of Coventry United in each of our 6 seasons in existence, and 2019/20 will be no exception. Veteran full-back, Brad Jones, returns to active duty following a an injury enforced year on the sidelines

Onto the midfielders. We start with Luke Downes. The former Leicester trainee established himself as a real locker room leader and a determined individual in his debut campaign, and will add to his 42 appearances and 3 goals thus far. His central midfield partner, Jake Holt, also returns for a second season. Holty joined from Leicester Road last summer, his strength and commitment making him a valuable member of our midfield. The third centre-mid to sign for the new campaign, Sam Belcher made a real impression following his mid-season switch from Hinckley, despite limited game time. Belcher bagged a goal and an assist on his debut against Wolves Sporting, and the ex Wycombe man will look to capitalise on further first team opportunities next season.

Forwards next, and this will be a VERY popular retainee. Top scorer Kyle Carey is sticking around, after scoring 11 goals in 26 appearances across two spells with United last season. The tricky winger will be haunting yet more defences in 2019/20. Talking of goals, the winner of the CUTV Goal of the Season Award, Joe Cairns, will remain with Coventry. The former Walsall youngster earned his Golden Boot for a stunner at Romulus. After establishing himself as an integral part of the frontline in the closing months of last season, Cairns is certainly one to watch this time around. Dominik Alleyne signs up for his third year with United, his second with the vice captaincy. The dreadlocked wideman joined from local rivals, Coventry Sphinx, in the summer of 2017, and will look to get a full season of football under his belt, following a frustrating series of injuries limiting his playing time last year. And finally, we welcome Tyler Haddow back on a season long contract. Every so often in non-league football, you find a ruby in a mountain of rocks. Tyler is that ruby. He was an incredible find and management were determined not to lose a talent like Tyler. Goalkeepers, watch out, Haddow is coming.

Along with the retainees, the signing of full-back, Lewis Hudson, has already been confirmed. The defender, returning after a year with Sphinx, is a popular figure at the Butts, and he’s all set for his third stint with the club on a season long contract. With an eye to the future, six players from our youth teams make the step up to the senior squad for the coming season. Central Midfielder and former U16s captain Cameron Morris, ex Everton trialist Midfielder Roberto Effah, versatile former Coventry City youth Defender Joe Anthony, pacey Left-Back Archie Bale, commanding Centre-Back Ethan Stanley and enthusiastic former Everton trialist Midfielder Ethan Dacres will be given the opportunity to cement a first team place.
