JS is OFF! COVENTRY UNITED F.C. | Loughborough Leave It Late

Loughborough Leave It Late

Coventry United suffered an injury time setback as Loughborough University secured a crucial three points in their survival bid.

The MFL Premier Division fixture was switched from the Butts Park Arena to Boldmere's Trevor Brown Memorial Ground, a venue at which United had narrowly beat The Mikes two days prior, as our home pitch continues to recover from the recent poor weather. After a slow start from both sides, United took the lead as Dominik Alleyne's header lobbed L'boro keeper James Stallan and dipped below the crossbar. Set pieces would prove to be United's downfall in the second half, although the decisions which lead to those opportunities were questionable. A rocket free kick from Scholars skipper Matt Crookes brought the game level shortly after the break, before the ref pointed to the spot as Frankie Baiget's trailing leg brought Eric Duah to the deck. Substitute Alex Dinsmore fired the penalty kick down the centre of the net and made it 2-1.

The Red and Greens pushed on in search of an equaliser, only to find a stubborn away defense in no mood to concede, but Chris Cox gave them no choice. His fierce hit from the edge of the box nearly burst the net as the captain had seemingly saved a point, or so we thought. A bizarre winner for Loughborough came deep into injury time. The United defence believed the ball had gone out for a goal kick. As keeper Tom Dyche ran to collect the ball, play would continue as Dinsmore controlled a low cross and hit the empty net, sparking jubilant celebrations from a side fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. The defeat leaves United 9th in the Total Motion Midland Football League Premier Division, as Loughborough find themselves level on points with 17th placed Stourport Swifts with the three points earned.

We'd like to thank Boldmere St Michaels for allowing us use of the Trevor Ground Memorial Ground.
