Jay Bradford Accepts General Manager RoleDate: 28 June 2019 at 09:55 by Liam Cook
Jay Bradford has accepted the position of Coventry United Ladies General Manager, and steps down as Ladies’ First Team Manager with immediate effect.
Jay steps away from management after 3 years in charge of Coventry, and bows out in style following the Red and Green Girls’ League and County Cup double winning campaign. While we are saddened Jay’s exceptional managerial reign has come to an end, a new reign is about to begin for the gaffer. As a requirement of the FA Womens’ Championship, all managers must obtain a UEFA A Coaching License. Jay has attempted twice to take the course for this qualification, but due to high demand and with places at a premium, the necessary qualification remains unclaimed, although Jay still harbours hope of attaining the licence in the future.
This is the start of a new chapter for the club, the team and for Jay. In her new role as General Manager, Jay will oversee the day to day running of the club, including it’s personnel, commercial and financial development, as well as relations with the league, FA and other outside partners. Arguably, no-one epitomises Coventry United as club like Jay, so it’s only fitting she will lead us into a new era as General Manager. She will no doubt prove as successful in running the Ladies section of the club as she was running the team.
Jay joined Coventry City, as it was known, as a 13 year old player, before taking various youth coaching roles alongside her on-field career. Injury ended the playing aspect of Jay’s involvement at the age of 21, but this led to further coaching positions within the club. As City transitioned to Coventry United, Jay’s responsibilities grew, and after turning down the manager’s job previously, she accepted the position shortly before the end of the 2015/16 season. She would go on to manage 103 competitive fixtures, winning 77, losing 19 and drawing 7 in her 3 year reign. United finished their league campaigns in 1st, 2ndand 4th(twice) under JB’s stewardship. Two League Cups, a Premier League Plate, the FAWNL Southern Premier Division Title AND promotion of the second tier of Womens’ Football is a pretty impressive haul, and Jay will go down in history as one of our greatest managers.
We are currently in the process of appointing a new Ladies’ First Team Manager. An announcement on this matter will be made in due course. We thank Jay for a wonderful 3 years of management and we wish her every success in her new position.
Coventry United Chairman, Peter Reynolds, has nothing but praise for Jay as he shares his thoughts on this new chapter: “It’s a strange situation, having to sacrifice your team manager who has just achieved promotion in style. Jay has proven herself to be an excellent football manager and certainly deserved to continue to lead in the Championship. However, the rules have provided us and Jay with a golden opportunity. The position of General Manager at Coventry United Ladies is crucial to our future success and stability, and who better to take up the challenge than the very person who knows how to win and leads by example. There is nothing more satisfying than appointing from within and Jay is a perfect fit for the job. We are safe in her hands. So good luck to you Jay, we will support you every step of the way. We have a very strong leadership team at Coventry United and we can look forward to the future with a high degree of confidence. PUCU.”
And here’s what the woman herself, Jay Bradford, had to say on her new job: “I am thrilled to have accepted the position of General manager. Not having my UEFA A license put me in a position where I was unable to remain in my post as first team manager. It’s tough to have to step away, but I think I can bring a lot to the role of General Manager and hopefully steer the club forward as we move in to the championship.”
