Plymouth FA Cup
Coventry United Ladies battled through a stubborn Plymouth side to reach the Third Round of the SSE Womens' FA Cup.
United entered the fixture at Communications Park as firm favourites following an impressive 9-1 league victory over the Pilgrims 7 days prior, but this would be an entirely different ball game. However the opening minutes would be similar to the previous game, with United taking an early advantage. Amber Hughes' mazing run into the penalty area was ended by a lunging Becca Wakely. The referee immediatley pointed to the spot, and resident penalty expert Chenise Austin did the rest, leaving keeper Sarah Prior rooted to the centre of the net.
But this would not lead to a United runaway victory like last time, as just 2 minutes later Helen Bleazard levelled the scores with an unstoppable surge through the United backline and a powerful strike to finish it off in style. What followed proved to be an afternoon of frustration for the Red and Green Girls, wth chances few and far between despite a whole host of promising attacking play. United would have to wait until the closing stages to seal their spot in Round 3, as Amy Wathan nodded home with 10 minutes to go.
