Coventry United Ladies extend their lead in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division to four points with a 6-0 victory at bottom placed C&K Basildon Ladies.

The Red and Green Girls were firm favourites heading into the fixture at Canvey Island FC against a Basildon side unrecognisable from the team who beat Coventry at the same venue last year, and Basildon’s search for their first win of the season will go on thanks to three strikes either side of the break.

Conditions were tricky to say the least, with an impromptu hail storm delaying kick off by a couple of minutes, and horrendous winds that stopped goal kicks mid-air! But it would take more than that to stop the inform Shannon O’Brien from setting up the opener on 14 minutes. The teenage winger latched onto the loose ball in the penalty area after a day dreaming Grace Gillard let the ball run away from here. One low cross later and Amy Wathan had the ball in the net with a tap in. The second came from the penalty spot as Amber Hughes was pushed to the deck in the area by Holly Turner. Chenise Austin provided the inevitable conclusion, firing into the bottom corner, leaving keeper Sarah Walker rooted to line. O’Brien was at it again 7 minutes before the break. Shannon received a through ball from Hughes and calmly slotted the ball in at the near post to make it 3-0.

The second half saw more of the same, with Coventry unchallenged at the back and dominant up front. Beth Merrick bagged United’s fourth 10 minutes after half time. Hughes’ cross rolled through Lois Jefferies to the onrushing Merrick who struck it across the keeper. Goal number 5 was an unlucky moment for Danielle Sillitoe. The Basildon defender’s sliding challenge on Merrick sent the ball into her own net past a helpless Walker. Austin had the chance to make it a double in added time, as a second penalty was awarded when Nicola Moore blocked substitute Helen Dermody’s cross with her arm. An emphatic spot kick from Austin ended the game at 6-0
