F.A. Vase First Round Proper
Coventry United vs Wednesfield
A strong Coventry United performance saw the hosts run out 5-0 winners against Wednesfield this afternoon in the Vase. The small crowd who braved the worst of British weather witnessed an excellent performance full of skill and intent as the Red and Greens romped into round 2. And with just a single yellow card for the visitors in the dying minutes, it was certainly an afternoon for free-flowing football despite the conditions.
Shaquille McDonald led the way with a brace, with goal contributions from Curvin Ellis, Jamal Clarke and new recruit from Solihull Moors, Arum Soleman, and it could have been more. This was a very one-sided game from the off with United launching wave after wave of attack with keeper Bradley Caswell called on to make a few important interventions on an otherwise trouble-free afternoon.
It would be difficult to pick a man-of-the-match for this one as there were class performances all over the pitch. In the press box, Shaq McDonald picked up two of the three votes available for a resurgent display, approaching his best efforts from last term.
The most interesting omission was Terry Anderson, serving a stadium ban for his alleged part in an altercation at the end of the Romulus game a few weeks back. In his place, Luke Morton and Harry Barnes took control of proceedings and masterminded this comprehensive win.
For United, it’s now on to Boldmere next Saturday at Butts Park Arena, 3pm. Thank you to everyone who turned out today in atrocious conditions; we hope you went home happy.
