Highgate (H) 18/19
Coventry United FC v Highgate United FC
Midland Football League Premier Division
Date: Saturday 27thFebruary 2019
Venue: Butts Park Arena
Well hello one and all. After last week’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat against South Normanton Athletic FC, United tonight welcome Highgate United to the Butts Park Arena to contest this MFLP encounter.
Highgate have had a bit of a disappointing season for them so far as they were one of the fancied teams for the title at the beginning of the season. Highgate are currently 2places and 2pts behind United so this should be a pretty even match that both teams will think is winnable.
United manager Terry Anderson should have a near full squad to choose from so the starting line up will be interesting.
The referee gets the game under way and it’s not too long before Highgate show their intentions when they press forward in only the 2ndminute. The ball is played out to the No7 Correy Corrithers who in turn cuts inside and dribbles across the edge of the area passing two defenders before seeing his powerful drive parried away by the United keeper Brendan Bunn. The loose ball is then nodded into the back of the net for the opening by the No9 Lei Brown.
UNITED 0 HIGHGATE 1
What a start that was for Highgate. They continue to make all the early running as United struggle to get to grips with a buoyant Highgate outfit. They press again in the 19thminute with the No10 Marco Adaggio doing well before seeing his firmly hit shot easily gathered by the United keeper Brendan Bunn.
United have now settled into the game well and are seeing a lot of the ball but are finding it hard to break down a resilient Highgate formation. Their first decent chance comes in the 28thminute when they win a free kick that’s taken by Luke Jones. His cross is played out and United’s Sam Belcher pounces on the loose ball and fires in a pile driver of a shot that goes just wide of the target.
The United pressure continues and Luke Downes gets himself a yellow card for his challenge on a Highgate defender in the 42ndminute. Then with the half drawing to a close, United break again as Sam Lockley is put through on goal but sadly his shot goes just wide of the post in the 44thminute. Soon after the referee blows up for half time.
UNITED 0 HIGHGATE 1
The second half gets under way with neither side making any changes during the break. United come out looking sharp as they look to get back level sooner rather than later. They win a corner in the 46thminute that’s taken by Sam Belcher who is in fact booked for dissent before he actually takes the corner. His cross comes in and Tyler Haddow connects and sends his header just over the bar.
Another United chance is soon created when they break with pace down the left with Sam Lockley. He bares down on goal and sees his low shot clawed away and out for a corner that is easily dealt with in the 55thminute.
Highgate are defending well and press forward in the 62ndminute. A good cross into the box picks out the No10 Marco Adaggio and his neat header is tipped onto the cross bar and out for a corner by the keeper Brendan Bunn.
United decide to make a change in the 65thminute when they take off Sam Lockley and send on Dominik Alleyne. Then soon after they make another change in the 70thminute when they take off Kai Williams and send on Eli Bako. Highgate follow suit and make a change of their own in the 72ndminute when they take off the No11 Issac Jagroop.
United are keeping the pressure on and are working hard but the final ball is proving to be problem for them so far. Highgate are standing firm and are dealing with the United threat with assured vigour.
Highgate decide to make another change in the 82ndminute with the No10 Marco Adaggio being replaced by the No14 Jack Cole. Then United make their final change in the 83rdminute when they take off Harrison Sawyer and send on Lewis Ison making his long awaited return in a red shirt. The changes are soon completed by both sides in the 84thminute when Highgate take off the No9 Lei Brown and send on the No15 Dale Taylor.
With the game now in the final minutes, United have completely bossed this second half and create another chance in the 88thminute when a Belcher corner picks out Gift Mussa who sends his header over the bar from six yards out. Their final chance of the game comes in the 90+4 minute when a loose ball is pounced upon by Sam Belcher who’s fierce drive fires just wide of the post.
Soon after the referee blows up and Highgate have held on to claim the 3pts.
UNITED 0 HIGHGATE 1
In summing up this game I would have to say that IF THIS WAS A BOXING MATCH UNITED WOULD HAVE WON ON POINTS. After a slow and sloppy start that gifted Highgate with their early lead, United settled into the game and went about trying to get back into this game. Highgate held their lead going into the break and the second half saw united completely dominate proceedings and created plenty of half chances that failed to materialise into any clear cut efforts on goal.
As the clock ran down, United never gave up as Highgate defended manfully and thwarted whatever United had to offer and so went home with the 3pts.
Players worthy of a mention would have to be the Highgate captain Sam Oji. He was immense in the centre of defence and mopped up anything that came his way.
For United they all worked really well and never gave up till the final whistle. Jamal Clarke and Kyle Barnett were once again a solid partnership in the centre of the United defence. Harrison Sawyer had another great game and combined his strong defensive duties with some great attacking link up play with tonight’s man of the match Tyler Haddow. Tyler replaced the injured in warm up Ben Vallance and took his chance to impress with both hands. Tyler showed good pace and looked to get into some great forward positions all night and was unlucky on a couple of occasions not to score so very well played Tyler Haddow.
