Well hello one and all. After last week’s hard fought and well earnt point away to Westfields, United today turn their attentions to the FA Vase 2nd round. Today we welcome back Boldmere St Michaels to the Butts to contest what I’m sure will be a very tough and entertaining cup tie. The mikes as they are affectionately known as were here a few weeks ago for a league fixture that they ended up winning by a solitary goal to claim the points. Today though that goes out of the window as United look to make amends and power into the next round of this prestigious cup competition.

United manager Terry Anderson will hopefully have a few of the injured players back and ready  for selection as we will need to be at are strongest and best if we are to progress any further in this competition.

The referee gets the game under way and United have started brightly. They are showing some good early intent and make a great early breakthrough in only the 9th minute when they make a quick break forward with a defence splitting pass from Gift Mussa putting Shaquille McDonald through on goal and he makes no mistake with a low powerful drive past the Mikes keeper Lewis Fenney for the opening goal.

That was a great opening start for United. They follow up with a free kick moments later that sees United’s Kyle Carey’s shot saved by the keeper Lewis Fenney in the 12th minute.

The Mikes muster up their first attempt on goal in the 14th minute when they push forward but the No9 Rikardo Reid’s shot flies high over the bar and also cleared the car park behind. They keep up with some determined pressure on the United defence and bring out a great save from the United keeper Bradley Caswell when the No7 Ben Usher-Shipway did well before sending a great shot in the 19th minute.

United ride out that spell of Mikes pressure and are soon back on the attack themselves. They break forward with purpose in the 20th minute when Arum Soleman played in a fantastic through ball in to Shaquille McDonald but sadly McDonalds angled cross shot pulled just wide of the far post. More good United forward play sees McDonald head just wide of the target in the 25th minute from a Ronee Hendricks corner. United are becoming quite dominant now and the concerted pressure finally paid off in the 27th minute. United pressed well as Shaquille McDonald stole the ball from a Mikes defender before squaring the ball across to the free Kyle Carey who made no mistake with a finally taken shot that flies past the keeper Lewis Fenney for a coolly taken goal to double United’s lead.

United are playing some great attacking football and are fully deserving of their two goal lead. The Mikes try to get back into the game when they break forward with the No9 Rikardo Reid who brings out a great save from United’s keeper Bradley Caswell in the 32nd minute.

United though are made of sterner stuff of late and snuff out any Mikes threat with consummate ease before another pacey United break sees the impressive Kyle Carey spring a lovely through ball for Arum Soleman to run onto before coolly side footing an angled shot past the Mikes keeper Lewis Fenney for a great third goal for United in the 37th minute.

That was a delightfully worked out goal that ripped right through the Mikes defence. Soon after the referee blows up for half time and what a half it was.

Half Time

Second half

The second half gets under way with neither side making any changes during the break. United start where they left off and are soon back on the attack. They break forward in the 47th minute as Kyle Carey races clear but his shot is well saved by the Mikes keeper Lewis Fenney.

The Mikes decide to make a change in the 53rd minute when they take off the No10 Alister Brauns and send on the No14 Joe Lyng. The Mikes are looking more of a threat in this half and they endorse that in the 58th minute when they win a free kick wide on the left that’s taken by the No7 Ben Usher-Shipway. His cross picks out the No2 Cameron Gayle but fortunately his header sails over the bar.

United decide to make a change themselves in the 63rd minute when they take off the injured Jake Holt and send on Curvin Ellis. The Mikes soon after in the 66th minute make another change when they take off the No6 J’cee Abraham and send on the No17 Ryan Brooks.

Both teams see half chances go begging but United’s Shaquille McDonald felt hard done by in the 71st minute when he chased the ball down before seeing his shot cleared off the line. United then make another change in the 72nd minute when they take off Shaquille McDonald and send on debutant No17 Joseph Cairns.

Soon after the Mikes No8 Owen Parry is booked for felling United’s  Joseph Cairns in the 79th minute and that’s followed up by the final Mikes change of the afternoon when they take off the No9 Rikardo Reid and send on the No15 Ryan Andrews in the 80th minute.

The game is now in the last 10 minutes and United are finishing it really strongly. Great United build up play sees Curvin Ellis do well before shooting and hitting the post in the 84th minute. Ellis then gathers the rebound inside the area but is felled and the referee points straight to the spot for a penalty. Curvin Ellis steps up to take it and his firmly hit shot smashes off the cross bar and out to safety in the 85th  minute.

The clock is running down and United’s Kyle Carey gets himself a booking for kicking the ball away in the 86th minute before eventually being taken off in the 88th minute and replaced by Shay Nicholson. Soon after the referee blows up for full time and United are safely through to the next round and the dream goes on.

Full Time

In summing up this game United were absolutely AWESOME today. They played some great attacking football that carved the Mikes open at will at times in a devastating first half performance as they raced into a 3-0 lead at the break. They were all very well taken team goals

The second half saw the Mikes make more of a fight of it and created a couple of decent chances but United stood up to the challenge well and were always in control of this game. To be fair the score line does not flatter United as this on another day could have easily been a 5 or 6 nil and that would not in my opinion be an exaggeration. This team performance for me is probably the best of the season so far with the intensity of their pressing play when not in possession of the ball and the precision of their passing when attacking was a joy to watch.

Players worthy of a mention today would have to be the No7 Ben Usher-Shipway for the Mikes. He showed good composure when on the ball and delivered a decent set piece when called upon too.

For United this was another great team performance that yielded many candidates for the man of the match award. Ronee Hendricks had for me his best game in a United shirt and stood up really well in the left back position. Kyle Barnett also stood out in the defence and was also willing and able to support the attacks notably for set pieces when required. Arum Soleman is looking settled in the side now and displayed a good range of passing to spring many of United’s attacks and also claimed a great goal along the way.  Shaquille McDonald was also very lively today and made some great runs throughout the game. He also showed his willingness to win the ball back with some good chasing down which culminated in him assisting a goal and scoring one himself. But for me today, Kyle Carey just shades it for me for man of the match. Kyles skills and trickery are all there to be seen but he has more than just that in his locker. He has the pace and eye for a defence splitting pass that creates many chances for his team mates and like today is more than capable of chipping in with a goal or two so well played Kyle Carey.
